Who is most at risk?

Although attitudes amongst most young people are now relatively sensible towards the whole question of drinking and driving they are still the age group most at risk.

Studies from around the world show that male drivers aged between about 16 and 30 are most vulnerable.

Drink drive injury accidents per mile driven, show that 17-19 year olds have 1½ times the number of accidents of the 20-24 age group and nearly 5 times the number of accidents of older drivers.

A forty percent increase in drinking by young drivers led to a twenty-five percent increase in fatal crashes caused by drivers under 26 years old in Finland (1996). Although male drivers are the biggest culprits, a study in Australia showed a trend towards a rise in middle-aged female drink-drivers.
