Lock it and lose it?

Lock itSadly, over the last few years car security has become more of a burning issue for everyone. The good news is that it is not as easy to force car locks as it used to be and cars are much more difficult to steal - in fact it's virtually impossible to steal modern cars without the keys. But thieves can still smash your windows and grab your valuables.

It's a good idea to lock your valuables in the boot when visiting motorway services or shopping centre car parks. But locking valuables away doesn't always mean that you will be protected - even if your stuff is securely locked in the car boot (trunk).

If you have to carry valuables in your car, such as cameras and laptops, etc., lock them away before you start your journey.

Clever criminals

Some thieves have now wised up to the fact that choosing cars at random can be unproductive, and trawling car parks looking through car windows creates suspicion.

Their solution? They, simply watch for people hiding things away in the boot! This is a sure fire way of finding a useful target. And knowing that the occupants will be away for a while...

Five top security tips...

  • Never leave your possessions on display in your vehicle
  • Avoid leaving purses and phones on the passenger seat when driving alone. These can be snatched in traffic jams (if your door is locked, they'll just smash your passenger window!)
  • Avoid attempting to hide valuables under the seats... They will often still be on view.
  • Keep your doors locked when driving, especially in towns and cities.
  • If you carry a laptop or handheld PC in the car, make sure that you regularly back up your data at home. If the worst should happen, your insurance can replace the laptop but your business data and family photos will be gone forever!
